Business Blog – Chapter 4
Over the last year, I have read more books on entrepreneurship, management, leadership and business strategy than I can even count. One main idea has been listed in almost all of these books. That idea is that you shouldn’t spend too much time deciding which decision is the right one. Instead, you should make a decision and then work hard to make that decision the right one. If that doesn’t sink in, read it again. It’s important; in fact, it’s one of the best lessons that I have learned from this entire process of starting a business. That lesson was huge in helping me pick my logo and color scheme.
If you look at all the logos for tech companies you’ll notice they all share a new age, modern look to them. That is what I wanted for MyClyq. The problem is, I’m pretty limited artistically, so I needed to hire someone to create it for me. Another problem in creating a logo is that a lot of high end design companies charge top dollar for this task. I know a company, that will remain anonymous, that was charged half a million dollars to re-create a logo and color scheme. What’s even more ridiculous is that the finished product was basically a logo in Times New Roman font.
I decided to use companies like Freelancer.com, fiverr.com and UpWork.com for this task. In my experience, these sites work best if you know exactly what you want. If you tell the freelancer to simply make you a logo for X Company, there is a high probability that you won’t like their result. How do I know? I told several freelancers to build me a logo and they came up with the below. It was terrible.
After I got these results back, I decided to do some research, find a color scheme and find some logos that I liked as a reference. Even though some of the above logos were pretty horrendous, I found a really great design team using UpWork. It took several hours of research, portfolio views, back and forth negotiating but when I was done, I was confident the team I chose would be able to craft the perfect Logo for me. The best part, I wouldn’t have to pay more than $50.00 for it. I know that sounds ridiculous, considering the story I told above but I also know a person, who will also remain anonymous, who paid under $100.00 for his company’s logo and they recently closed a $2+ million dollar series A in Los Angeles.
When I was looking for logos I liked, a few came to mind. I like Twitter’s bird, Instagram’s camera, and SnapChat’s ghost but the problem is MyClyq doesn’t really fit that type of descriptive image. I also like the modern and sleek look of the Tumblr T and the LinkedIn in. I used all of these to create a mental image of what I wanted. Simplicity is really important to me so I decided to have the Logo just be a M and a C for MyClyq and then the rest of the name design to be sleek and modern. I looked at a few fonts on the Internet and sent them over to my design team. I explained to them what I wanted and even drew a very terrible picture showing them. Honestly, I wish I kept the picture to show you how bad it was and how good my design team was.
Deciding on the color scheme was a lot easier. I was actually at a sporting goods store when I picked out my color scheme. One of the shoes I saw there had these two colors that complimented each other really well and were also bright and grabbed my attention from across the room. I took a picture of the shoes with my phone, found a color match site through Google and I was set.
As I mentioned in the first paragraph, I tried not to linger on any design too much. If I liked it, I would pick it. Once I sent over the color scheme, my design team sent back five designs and immediately one stood out. I decided to pick that one and work to make it the perfect choice for me. So far, nearly a year later, I have no regrets and still love the logo and name design as much as I did the first time I saw it.
Now that I had a logo and a color scheme, it was time to move on to designing the website.
